Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we hear most often — along with a few we probably hear in spirit. 😄
Machines, Embroidery & “What Did I Just Buy?
Helpful answers for machines, embroidery, upgrades, and those “what does this button do?” moments. 😄
Do I need an expensive machine to start quilting or embroidery?
Absolutely not. Some of the most beautiful projects we’ve ever seen were created on simple machines with a lot of heart behind them. Creativity matters far more than owning the fanciest machine in the room.
Why are sewing machines difficult to return once opened?
Once a machine has been activated, stitched on, registered, or removed from original packaging, it can no longer be sold as brand-new equipment. Unfortunately, sewing machines are a little different than returning socks to Amazon. 😄
Can I ask questions before purchasing a machine?
Please do. We’d much rather help you choose confidently the first time than have someone feel overwhelmed or frustrated later.
Can I test a machine before buying?
Yes! We strongly encourage demos, questions, comparisons, and hands-on learning whenever possible. Buying a machine should feel exciting — not stressful.
Do you offer machine education?
Absolutely. We believe machines should feel inspiring, not intimidating. Education and support are a huge part of what we do at Sew & Saw.
And don’t worry — we don’t believe in “question quotas.” If you forget something later, need a refresher, or suddenly can’t remember what that button does again, we’ve got you. 😄
Many of our Owners Circle members also receive complimentary classes, discounted events, priority support, and a few extra perks we don’t always advertise publicly. (Because every good creative club deserves a little mystery. 😄)
Do I really need another machine?
That depends entirely on whether you’re asking your sewing friends or your accountant.
Quilting, Creativity & Controlled Chaos
For unfinished projects, emotional support fabric, creative rabbit holes, and the beautifully chaotic side of making things. 😄
Why does every quilter have unfinished projects?
We honestly believe unfinished projects are part of the creative process. Sometimes inspiration moves faster than time, energy, or available sewing room space. We support both finished masterpieces and beautifully chaotic project piles. 😄
Should you fire a friend who says you have too much fabric?
No. You gently introduce them to quilting, embroidery, sewing, or crafting and there’s a very good chance they’ll eventually help you acquire more fabric themselves.
At minimum, they’ll probably start sending you Pinterest ideas that contribute to the situation. 😄
Is it normal to leave 97 tabs open researching projects?
Completely normal. We consider excessive creative tabs, screenshots, saved tutorials, and “I’ll come back to that later” research part of the artistic process at this point. 😄
Do I really need more fabric?
Emotionally? Probably yes.
Technically? That answer depends entirely on who you ask in your household. 😄
Why does fabric become emotionally attached to us?
We’re still researching this phenomenon ourselves. One minute it’s “just fabric,” and the next minute it has a future project, matching thread, and long-term residency in the sewing room.
Why do creative people collect supplies faster than they finish projects?
Because inspiration is exciting, possibilities are endless, and somehow every new project idea feels like “the one” right up until another beautiful fabric collection appears. 😄
Classes, Confidence & Learning Together
Because creativity should feel exciting, encouraging, and approachable — not intimidating or overwhelming.
Can I bring my own machine to class?
In many cases, yes. Some classes may have specific machine or supply requirements, so we always recommend checking class details beforehand.
What if I mess up my project?
Then congratulations — you’re officially creating. Mistakes are part of sewing, quilting, embroidery, and learning. Most experienced makers keep seam rippers within arm’s reach at all times. 😄
Will I feel out of place if I’m new?
Absolutely not. Sew & Saw was created to feel welcoming, supportive, and encouraging for makers at every stage of the creative journey.
How do class refunds work?
Class and event registrations may become non-refundable once materials, preparation, reserved seating, or project kits have been arranged.
That said, we also understand that life happens, schedules change, illnesses pop up, and sometimes the crafting universe has other plans. 😄
If something unexpected comes up, please reach out — we’ll always do our best to work with you whenever possible.
Are beginners welcome?
Absolutely. Beginners are always welcome here. Whether you’re brand new or have years of experience, our goal is to create a supportive environment where creativity feels exciting, encouraging, and approachable — not intimidating.
Do I need experience?
Not at all. Beginners are always welcome here. Whether you’re brand new or have years of experience, our goal is to create a supportive environment where creativity feels fun instead of stressful.
Why does creativity feel overwhelming sometimes?
Because creative people tend to have big ideas, high expectations, limited time, and approximately 47 projects happening at once. 😄
We believe creativity should feel inspiring — not exhausting.
What if I forget what I learned after class?
That’s completely normal. Creativity isn’t a one-time test, and we don’t believe in “question quotas.” If you need a refresher later, we’ve got you.
Longarm Quilting & Finishing
Big quilts, beautiful finishes, longarm questions, and the magical moment when your project finally comes together.
What is longarm quilting?
Longarm quilting uses a specialized quilting machine designed to help finish larger quilts more efficiently and beautifully than trying to wrestle them through a standard domestic machine.
Do you offer longarm quilting services?
Yes! We offer longarm quilting services and creative finishing support to help bring quilts to life.
Can beginners learn longarm quilting?
Absolutely. Longarm quilting can feel intimidating at first, but many people are surprised by how quickly confidence grows with the right support and guidance.
Do I need a giant sewing room to own a longarm?
Not necessarily — although we fully admit that quilting has a way of slowly expanding into every available room, corner, table, and flat surface over time. 😄
Do I need a longarm machine at home?
Not at all. Many quilters happily create beautiful quilts without owning a longarm machine at home.
Some makers love learning longarm quilting themselves, while others prefer using professional quilting services so they can focus on piecing, creativity, and finishing projects without needing additional space or equipment.
Can you help finish my quilt if I get overwhelmed?
Absolutely. Many makers love piecing their quilts but prefer help with quilting or finishing. Sometimes having support is the difference between an unfinished project pile and a finished quilt you’re proud to display.
Why does quilting suddenly require giant tables?
Because quilts often carry memories, stories, comfort, creativity, and love right alongside the fabric and thread. They become more than projects surprisingly fast.
Orders, Shipping & Grown-Up Stuff
The practical questions, shipping answers, return policies, and the slightly less exciting — but still important — grown-up stuff.
Do you ship orders?
Yes! We ship throughout the United States and do our best to process orders as quickly and carefully as possible.
How long does shipping usually take?
Shipping times can vary depending on the item, manufacturer availability, weather, carrier delays, and occasionally the crafting universe deciding to test everyone’s patience. 😄
We’ll always do our best to keep you updated along the way.
What happens if something arrives damaged?
If something arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us as soon as possible so we can help make it right.
Why can’t opened machines be returned as new?
Once a machine has been activated, stitched on, registered, or removed from original packaging, it can no longer be sold as brand-new equipment. Sewing and embroidery machines are specialty equipment and work a little differently than standard retail products.
Can I return fabric or notions?
Because fabric cuts, thread, stabilizers, patterns, software, and many notions are specialty items, they are generally non-returnable unless something arrives damaged or incorrect.
(And honestly, fabric usually becomes part of the family pretty quickly anyway. 😄)
What if I accidentally order the wrong thing?
Mistakes happen — especially when creative excitement and late-night project planning get involved. 😄
If you realize something is wrong with your order, contact us as quickly as possible and we’ll do our best to help before the order ships.
Why is fabric shopping considered cardio?
We’re not officially qualified to answer that medically, but the adrenaline definitely starts pumping when fabric shopping and planning a new project. 😄
And somehow we always get hungry when starting a new project too, so clearly extra calories must be getting burned somewhere along the way…right?
Inspiration, Community & Creative Life
Creativity, inspiration, encouragement, community, and the beautifully messy adventure of making something meaningful.
What makes Sew & Saw different?
We focus on more than products — we focus on helping makers feel confident, inspired, supported, and excited about creating again.
Sew & Saw was built to feel welcoming, encouraging, and community-driven instead of overwhelming or intimidating.
Why does creativity matter so much?
Creativity helps people slow down, process emotions, express ideas, build confidence, and create meaningful things with their hands. Sometimes it’s therapy with fabric and thread. 😄
Is buying fabric and sewing fabric technically two separate hobbies?
Based on current evidence from sewing rooms everywhere…yes. 😄
Why “Inspire Your Everyday”?
Because creativity doesn’t only happen during big projects or perfect moments. Sometimes inspiration shows up in simple things — fabric, color, texture, ideas, community, or finally finishing something you’ve been meaning to start.
How do I stay inspired without getting overwhelmed?
We believe creativity should feel encouraging, not exhausting. Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down, start simple, finish one small project, and enjoy the process instead of chasing perfection.
Why does sewing help people relax?
For many people, sewing, quilting, embroidery, and crafting create a sense of calm, focus, rhythm, and accomplishment that’s hard to find in everyday life.
